Role of the consultant with artificial intelligence: Does it make sense to exist?

The answer is: it depends.

With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced management software, such as our IAAPP, the figure of the traditional consultant-understood as the one who produces documents, forms, or verifies systems updates-is in danger of losing its meaning. These once central activities are now increasingly automatable and manageable through digital tools that provide accuracy, speed, and accessibility.

However, this does not imply the end of the counselor's role, but rather the need for it to evolve.

A Paradigm Change

The modern consultant must shift from a bureaucratic to a strategic approach. It is no longer enough to be the executor of operational activities or the organizer of administrative paperwork. The key to staying relevant lies in becoming a true expert: the one who possesses the know-how, who can interpret business realities, recognize specific client needs, and adjust strategies according to emerging challenges and opportunities.

This means:

1. Analyze and understand the context: AI can process data, but it is up to the consultant to determine how that information can be translated into concrete actions.

2. Define strategic lines: AI supports, but does not replace, the human ability to create visions and strategies tailored to customers.

3. Accompanying change: The consultant becomes a guide who helps organizations navigate technological, social, and regulatory transformations.

From Bureaucracy to Expertise

The fundamental difference is between those who merely execute and those who create value. The former is easily replaced by increasingly sophisticated digital tools; the latter becomes indispensable. This transition requires the consultant to invest in new skills, not only technical but also relational and strategic. The ability to build relationships, understand industry dynamics, and propose innovative solutions are the hallmarks of a professional of the future.

Conclusion

The role of the consultant in the age of artificial intelligence still makes sense, but only if it is rethought. There is no longer room for the bureaucrat; it is time for the expert. A professional who uses technology as an ally to enhance his or her impact, keeping at the center the added value provided by his or her expertise and ability to adapt to an ever-changing world.
