Role of the consultant with artificial intelligence: Does it make sense?

The answer is: it depends.

With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced management software, such as our IAAPP, the figure of the traditional consultant — understood as the one who produces documents, forms, or verifies the updating of systems — risks losing its meaning. These activities, once central, are now increasingly automated and manageable through digital tools that guarantee accuracy, speed and accessibility.

However, this does not imply the end of the consultant's role, but rather the need for it to evolve.

A Paradigm Change

The modern consultant must move from a bureaucratic to a strategic approach. It is no longer sufficient to be the executor of operational activities or the organiser of administrative paperwork. The key to remaining relevant lies in becoming a true expert: the one who possesses the know-how, who knows how to interpret business reality, recognise the specific needs of the customer and adapt strategies according to emerging challenges and opportunities.

This means:

1. Analysing and understanding the context: AI can process data, but it is up to the consultant to determine how this information can be translated into concrete actions.

2. Define strategic lines: AI supports, but does not replace, the human ability to create visions and strategies tailored to clients.

3. Accompanying change: The consultant becomes a guide that helps organisations navigate technological, social and regulatory transformations.

The consultant becomes a guide that helps organisations navigate technological, social and regulatory transformations.

From Bureaucracy to Expertise

The fundamental difference è between those who merely execute and those who create value. The former is easily replaced by increasingly sophisticated digital tools, the latter becomes indispensable. This transition requires the consultant to invest in new skills, not only technical but also relational and strategic. The ability to build relationships, understand industry dynamics and propose innovative solutions are the hallmarks of a professional of the future.

Conclusion

The role of the consultant in the age of artificial intelligence still makes sense, but only if it is rethought. There is è no more room for the bureaucrat; è it is time for the expert. A professional who uses technology as an ally to enhance his or her impact, keeping at the centre the added value provided by his or her expertise and ability to adapt to an ever-changing world.
